Getting to Kohut

Kamp Kohut provides a travel allowance to help staff with expenses to and from camp. The amount will be determined by which geographical location from which a staff member is traveling from and/or if the staff member has obtained employment through an international placement agency.

Location

We are located on Lake Thompson in Oxford, Maine, approximately one hour from the coast and one hour from the White Mountains of New Hampshire. We are about 50 minutes northwest of Portland, Maine, and about three hours north of Boston, Massachusetts.

Kamp Kohut provides a travel allowance to all staff. The amount given is determined by where you live and if you are hired through an international staffing agency.

There are several ways our staff get to Kamp Kohut. Car, bus, plane, and train are the most typical.

It’s easy to get to Kohut and we can help! Staff can travel by plane, bus, train, or car. Specific information for each method is outlined in the sections below.

For hired staff, please check your Terms Of Employment for your specific arrival and departure dates! Also, staff must let us know travel plans by May 1st!

Arrival by Plane

There are a number of flight options. Staff may fly into Boston (Logan International Airport), or Portland, Maine (Portland International Jetport). If flying into Boston, take the Concord Coach Lines bus to Portland, Maine (approximately 2.5 hours). We will pick staff up at the Concord Coach Lines Station and drive to camp. See the bus section on this page for more information. If flying into Portland, Maine, we will pick staff up from the airport and drive to camp. The drive from Portland, Maine, to camp takes approximately 50 minutes.

Flights into Boston tend to be much less expensive, while Portland is much closer to camp.

We are unable to pick staff up from any other area airports, but we can sometimes make arrangements from alternative locations in Portland should that be convenient (i.e. a hotel, car rental agency, etc.).

Arrival by Bus

There are two bus options, the Concord Coach Lines and Greyhound Bus Lines. The Concord Coach Bus is most convenient for travelers arriving in Boston, as it has stops at Logan Airport, North Station and South Station and travels directly to Portland, Maine. Camp will pick staff up at the Concord Trailways Station in Portland and drive to camp. The Greyhound Bus is most convenient from all other locations. Travelers may begin their journey at any starting point. Once at the Greyhound Station in Portland, Maine, we will pick staff up and drive to camp.

Arrival by Train

The only train option is the Amtrak Downeaster. Travelers may begin their journey at any starting point and connect to the Downeaster in Boston. Once at the Amtrack station in Portland, Maine, we will pick staff up and drive to camp.

Arrival by Car

Staff are welcome to drive themselves to camp or be dropped off by family or friends. We ask that staff plan to arrive between 2:00pm and 4:00pm on the designated arrival date.

Please park in the Parking Lot and check in at the Office upon arrival. Our Welcoming Committee will greet newly arrived staff, help with luggage, and provide further instructions. Family and friends who are dropping you off are welcome to stay and visit until 4:00pm.

Staff vehicles may be parked in the Parking Lot for the duration of the summer and can be used on time off. Personal vehicles are recommended, but not required, as Kamp Kohut will do our best to provide transportation on time off. Please note: Kohut is not responsible for personal property.

Directions to Kamp Kohut can be found here.

Arrival Day

On arrival day, we will provide two shuttles between the Portland pick-up locations and camp. The first one starts pickups in Portland at 3:00pm and the second at 8:00pm. Should a staff member miss the last shuttle, please call the camp office at 1-888-465-6488 or email Carly for instructions.

Departure

All staff will be dismissed at 10:00am on the Departure Day (check the Terms Of Employment for specific departure date). A shuttle will be provided to the Portland Jetport, the Concord Trailways Bus Station, and the Greyhound Bus Station at 10:30am for anyone not driving their own car or riding with a friend.

The shuttle will leave promptly and will take approximately 50 minutes to arrive at the first stop. All Portland drop offs will be complete by 12:00pm. Please plan accordingly! For example, if taking the Concord Trailways Bus back to Boston to catch a flight out of Logan Airport, allow the travel time between camp and Portland, as well as travel time between Portland and Boston. A late afternoon or early evening departure flight would be advisable.
